reclaiming curiosity

Somewhere along the way I lost my curiosity about software, databases and language. I still research stuff on a daily basis as I still love to learn but the topics are usually very domestic in nature.

It has been very hard for me to accept the fact that I have to work. Very hard. I think if I had never stopped working this would be less of a struggle. And struggle with it I do. I know kids thrive at home with a consistent caregiver (mom or dad). I believe that is part of the natural order. I also believe this should not occur in isolation with all of us hanging out alone with children in our suburban boxes. But that is another topic.

I want to flex my creative muscles and stick a toe into programming to see if I like it. If I can regain my curiosity it is probably doable. But if I can't - game over. Am I weird enough to be a programmer? ;-) one of our dev guys told me I look good today. I think he might need to get out more.

I decided to take a class, I know smart people can read books and learn this stuff but I like a classroom environment. It starts June 1st and is at almost college college. Maybe this old dog can learn new tricks!!!!

On another note I am borderline obsessed with buffy the vampire slayer. I never watched it back in the day because I was always working. But I am finding it super entertaining! I think joss whedon is a genius. I will be so sad if they cancel dollhouse.

Eternally Sick

I feel like I have been sick forever. I know I have at least been sick since March 20. I had an ear infection. Then bronchitis. Now I have tonsillitis. This will be my third round of antibiotics since March 20th. I guess I shouldn't go see my new great nephew as I don't want to infect him. :-( I am not sure if I am even contagious. The kids aren't sick. Husband is okay. Dog is well.

ninjas needed

So part of my civic duty includes passing out the HOA newsletters to every house on our street. You can imagine my dismay when I read that there have been 13 home breakins since January. In the same time period last year there was only 1. Now, I'm not exactly married to our possesions but there are some things in our possesion that are irreplacable. Such as our children. And dog. Some of the breakins have occurred in the evening. We decided to get a monitored home security system. I will sleep better knowing that we will at least be alerted if someone breaches our fortifications. This was my second out of body experience in a month. The first being when I bought the tv. It seems like such an unlikely move for us to make. I promise we will not be stashing firearms or signed Bush photos anytime soon. I don't like to live in fear - I can't live in fear. It goes against my assumption that people are inherently good. And i need to live in a world where I can assume that. But I won't be naive either. Desperate times make desperate people make desperate choices.

As I drove down the street on Sunday I noted that nearly everyone has a security sign near their front door. I guess I just didn't see that before. Next week is the HOA meeting and the topic will be crime. I am bringing a stack of ADTs salespersons biz cards.

Great Aunt Ashley!!!

While 33 feels a bit young to be a Great Aunt, I was 6 weeks old when I became an Aunt. And that's pretty young. For readers unfamiliar with my hillbilly past - my mom was 40 when she had me and my sister was 18 when she had my niece.

Said Niece has just birthed a beautiful baby boy named Miles. 6lbs 6oz of baby glory. I hope to be driving to fort worth soon to see the little dude. They recently relocated to that area and rented out their house in Austin.

In keeping with his mother and father, Miles is simply beautiful:

I cant wait to kiss those sweet cheeks!!!

Supermom?Or just a really busy person?

Today I hit the floor running at 6:30 and was in place at my desk by 7:30. At work I was super fucking busy, like always. I wrapped up a project, trained the customer over the phone for 2 hours, worked on documentation and updated my status logs, solved issues, and emailed and chatted with the project managers of a few of my other projects. I have 10 projects. By 4:30 I was exhausted.

But 4:30 is when my day really begins, at least in my mind. I run to my car and race down 360. Every minute counts on 360. Traffic increases exponentially every 1o minutes I think. I got gas. I reached the daycare at 5pm. Home by 5:15. Travis made dinner! While he cooked I took the boys outside to play. We played. We watered plants. Then Henry and I baked cupcakes from scratch. Banana cupcakes. We ate dinner. I cleaned the kitchen and washed some bottles while Super Husband read to the kids. I put henry to bed. Travis put Simon to bed. I stuffed 24 eggs with stickers and then frosted the cupcakes. I fashioned a holder for the cupcakes out of a Goldfish Box.

Now I am blogging and I can hear a small child sneaking up the stairs. Once I get that booger back to bed we will watch a movie. I might pop a lunesta. Then sleep. Then start over.

I am almost embarrassed to post this

But I am also a teensy bit excited. We finally joined the new millenium. We purchased a flat panel tv last night. My 26" tv from 2001 had an occasional blue spot in the corner and a broken cable input plus the distance from the couch, yeah you get the picture (pun!). It feels weird to spend this kind of cash in this economy. But at least we will have entertainment if we get laid off. I was silly to not realize we would also need a new DVD player if we want the hd picture. So that is next on the list., I guess. It also won't fit in our tv cabinet so I will be putting that on craigslist. Anyone need it? Or a pretty new DVD player (free)? Or the old tv (free)? Just let me know.

So yeah, we are excited. We do watch DVDs and Internet tv frequently so this tv will get some useage. We don't have cable and still won't get that. I did hear that a digital antenna thingy will pick up 20 channels and I think that includes the HD PBS.

I feel like we have opened pandoras box of entertainment and consumerism. We don't have a tuner or speakers or a bluray player or bluray DVDs or a good piece of furniture to put the tv on. Well, when the economy improves we will know we have done our part. As I was pushing the huge cart containing the tv through Costco I felt very American. It was an out of body experience much like when I started going to the gym.
